Mixing of the compost
Is not a must for anyone who does not want to.
What happens when you mix in the compost mass is that you
Add extra air to make microorganisms easier to breathe.
There is also some decomposition of the material and any
lumps; the surface exposed to the microorganisms becomes larger.
Mixing fresh material into the active layer means that the material enters the process faster. Mixing can therefore preferably take place in connection with filling of new material. Note, however, that the addition of current material is a prerequisite for the mixing to get the desired effect. If you have a wet, compact mass, you do not get more air through the mixing, you just move on the cloth. Soils with power materials can not be compensated with more mixing.
Standing containers
If you have a standing compost, it is quite sufficient to mix in
the top, 20-30 cm thick, layer. Fresh material with high oxygen requirements will otherwise be deposited in deeper layers where there is poorer access to oxygen and the process then slows down. Mixing deep down is also more difficult. In addition, no stratification is built up in the compost. This makes it more difficult to empty the compost container when it is full, at least if it is a container consisting of a compartment. The entire column then consists of a mixture of fresh and ready-made material, and if you want to continue composting, you need to get another compost.
Another reason for mixing only superficially is that the worms like
usually found in the bottom layer does not like being disturbed in their existence.
Rotating containers
A rotating container should be rotated so that the material becomes airy and
moisture evenly distributed. You do this by spinning a couple of turns
in connection with filling up with new material. Sometimes it can
occur some ball formation in a rotating compost. contents
The ball usually takes longer to break down than the rest of the ball
